Performance Analysis on Top Cryptocurrencies in 2018

With the New Year has come a roller coaster of a ride. Billions have been made and billions have been lost and all of this has been amidst a sea of media FUD. This article will be looking objectively at the top coins’ performance and analysing how they are performing within the crash.

Top 10 Coins

BITCOIN Of course the first coin to look at will be Bitcoin (BTC). Bitcoin started the year at $13,477 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $8,358 USD. This represents a change of -38%. The last time bitcoin was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Nov 25th. This demonstrates that a lot of the hard work to rise to its peaks has been lost over the last two weeks. Regardless of if you have invested in BTC, this is important to look at since many trading pairs will be trading with it. Thus if a coin is worth 0.0001BTC then when BTC falls it will be worth less USD. The same concept goes with Ethereum.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $13,477 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $8,358 USD

Performance: -38%

Previous price point: 25th Nov 2018

ETHEREUM (ETH) is naturally the next in line considering it is 20% of total market cap. ETH started the year at $716.72 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $839.89 USD. This represents a change of +17%. The last time Ethereum was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Jan 2nd. This demonstrates that ETH has not been hit nearly as hard as many other coins during the major crashes over the last few weeks. Even though it peaked at almost double the Jan 1st price about 1 month ago, a lot of those gains were superficial and have since corrected naturally. To finish on such a strong positive gain says volumes for this coin. Many are predicting it will overtake BTC eventually.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $716.72 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $839.89 USD

Performance: +17%

Previous price point: 02nd Jan 2018

RIPPLE (XRP) is sitting in 3rd place on coinmarketcap.com and has been involved in a lot of hype over the last few months, with many investors making tidy profits from the waves. XRP started the year at $2.21 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $1.05 USD. This represents a change of -52.5%. The last time Ripple was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Dec 26th. This is the hardest hit coin in the top 10 over the 2018 period. Due to the huge investment by certain large companies as seen here, this coin still has great potential. These include Seagate, Venture51, Accenture and Blockchain Capital just to name a few. This crash of Ripple can be seen as a second chance to get invested into one of the biggest coins on the market.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $2.21 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $1.05 USD

Performance: -52.5%

Previous price point: 26th Dec 2018

BCH started the year at $2,446.35 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $1,261.14 USD. This represents a change of -48.5%. The last time Bitcoin Cash was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Nov 23rd. This follows closely with XRP’s high losses. BCH is the original coin from the hard fork, but still has a strong following keeping its price relatively profitable since inception.

12th Feb 2018 Price: $1,261.14 USD

Performance: -48.5%

Previous price point: 23rd Nov 2018

ADA started the year at $0.683 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $0.383 USD. This represents a change of -44%. The last time Cardano was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Dec 28th. One can suggest a lot of this drop is due to the natural correction which was expected as a result of its massive and sudden increase. ADA has a strong team behind it and is said to fix some of the problems already occurring with both BTC and ETH blockchains.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $0.683 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $0.383 USD

Performance: -44%

Previous price point: 28th Dec 2018

LTC started the year at $222.37 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $154.43 USD. This represents a change of -30.6%. The last time Litecoin was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Dec 11th. Litecoin is a popular coin among miners and investors alike again with a solid team and project.

The last time XLM was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Jan 1st. This has outperformed many of the other top 10 coins during this early 2018 period. It wouldn’t be surprising if it continued to rise even further in the rest of the year.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $0.316 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $0.386 USD

Performance: +22.4%

The last time NEO was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Jan 9th. NEO is the top performed in 2018 for the top 10 coins and for most in the top 100. NEO has already got a great following and is being integrated into many projects.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $73.66 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $108.78 USD

The recent price match of Jan 10th shows how strongly this coin is holding through the crypto turmoil.

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $8.48 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $8.86 USD

Performance: +4.5%

Previous price point: 10th Jan 2018

IOTA (MIOTA) is the last of the top 10 coins on coinmarketcap.com and increased in price rapidly. MIOTA started the year at $3.33 USD and as of 12th February 2018 it is currently $1.79 USD. This represents a change of -46.3%. The last time MIOTA was at its current price (prior to the last two weeks) was in Dec 4th. Similarly to ADA, MIOTA had a rapid price increase prior to the end of 2017 and as such was due for a correction. After its peak at over $5 USD it has dropped at a sensible rate showing strong support against the price reductions. This is another coin which shows high potential

Summary:

1st Jan 2018 Price: $3.33 USD

12th Feb 2018 Price: $1.79 USD

Performance: -46.3%

Previous price point: 4th Dec 2018

Conclusion

A lot of these coins have major pairs with BTC and as such are performing very well considering the price drop of almost 40% for BTC. As BTC has started rising many of these others are also coming back up. A special mention goes to both XLM and NEO who have both risen 22.4% and 47.7% respectively since the start of the year. This analysis shows there is always money to be made regardless of market conditions. It also shows how recently these coins were still rising to get to the price they are today. Compared to only 2 months prior and all except 3 coins are in positive overall.

If you are looking for relatively safe coins to invest in then look at the above list. There are many other coins which can make money on, but few have such strong support or teams involved with them already.
